Updates on COVID-19, Match Point, and Volleyball

Like you, the Match Point team has been saddened by the loss of the NCAA Men’s Volleyball season, as well as the suspension of all events sanctioned by USA Volleyball and other boys’ club events across the country. In these unprecedented times, we hope for the safety and wellbeing of all athletes and their families. Additionally, our hearts go out to the many high school and college seniors whose seasons have ended early. 

However, our team is committed to sharing great volleyball stories with you through our website blog and podcast. We want to do our part to keep the volleyball community entertained and engaged. Here are a few items of interest to keep you in the know about what’s happening in volleyball circles around the country:

  • On March 19, USA Volleyball announced the elimination of sanctions for all USA Volleyball activities through April 15, 2020. This elimination includes all events, training sessions, team activities, and more. To help families affected by the pandemic, USA Volleyball has pulled together a webpage of resources, including activities for kids, how to talk to your family about the coronavirus, and volleyball training tips even for players of different sports. 
  • The NCAA Division I Council Coordination committee officials announced eligibility relief for spring athletes. The association posted on Twitter that “eligibility relief is appropriate for all Division I student-athletes who participated in spring sports.” The statement added that leagues within the association would sort out the policy’s details “in the coming days and weeks.” No further details have been shared about how eligibility relief will work. Match Point will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they arise.
  • As a sign of solidarity, NCAA member schools created a social media campaign tagged #UnitedasOne. NCAA Volleyball joined in this week, posting on Twitter, “Dig deep. Soon enough we’ll Volley On.” 
  • On March 23, International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound told USA Today the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will be postponed, likely to 2021. No further details have been released at this time.
